Pre-lit Christmas trees with built-in lights

Quick answer

A pre-lit Christmas tree comes with LED string lights already fitted and evenly spaced through the branches, so there is no untangling or wiring — you assemble the tree, plug it in and decorate. As a rule of thumb, allow about 100 lights per 30 cm (1 ft) of height for a full look, and choose warm white for a classic glow or cool white for a crisp, modern one.

Read the FAQ

Pre-lit trees solve the most tedious part of Christmas: stringing the lights. The lights are wired into the branches at the factory, balanced from top to bottom, so the tree looks evenly lit and goes up in minutes.

Why choose a pre-lit tree?

How many lights do you need?

For a full, even glow, plan for roughly 100 LEDs per 30 cm (1 ft) of tree height — more if you like a dense, sparkling look. Pre-lit trees already meet or exceed this, but it helps to know the numbers when comparing models.

Tree heightLights (guide)
1.2 m (4 ft)around 400+
1.8 m (6 ft)around 600+
2.1 m (7 ft)around 700+
2.4 m (8 ft)around 800+

Mains or battery — and what if a bulb fails?

Most pre-lit trees run from the mains; smaller and tabletop trees may be battery-powered for flexible placement. Modern LED sets are wired so that if one bulb fails the rest of the string stays lit, and spare bulbs and fuses are usually supplied.

Choosing the right height

Leave 15–30 cm of clearance for the topper. A 2.5 m room suits a 1.8–2.1 m tree.

Care & storage

Because the lights stay on the tree, store a pre-lit tree gently in its box or a padded bag to protect the wiring, and avoid crushing the branches. Shape (“fluff”) the branches each year so the light spreads evenly.

Frequently asked questions

How many lights do I need for a 6ft Christmas tree?
Around 600 lights or more for a full, even glow — roughly 100 LEDs per 30 cm (1 ft) of height. A pre-lit 6 ft tree already comes with at least this many fitted.
What is a pre-lit Christmas tree?
A pre-lit tree has LED string lights built into the branches at the factory, evenly spaced from top to bottom. You assemble the tree, plug it in and decorate — there is no separate light-stringing.
Is warm white or cool white better for a Christmas tree?
Warm white gives a soft, golden, traditional glow and is the most popular choice. Cool white is crisp and modern and suits white or silver themes. Some trees offer both, switchable.
Do the lights stay on if one bulb breaks?
On modern LED pre-lit trees, yes — the string is wired so a single failed bulb does not switch off the rest. Spare bulbs and fuses are usually included.
Are pre-lit LED trees expensive to run?
No. LED lights use very little electricity and stay cool, so running a pre-lit tree through the season costs only a few cents.
